ABOUT LONG ISLAND
Long Island is located approximately 190 miles SouthEast of Nassau. We can be reached either by air or water. There are 2 airports on the island. Stella Maris (SML) is 12 miles North of Wemyss, and Deadman's Cay (LGI) is 20 miles South. Southern Air Charters, PineappleAir and BahamasAir serve one or both of the airports daily, sometimes twice a day. Use www.bahamago.com to look for flights from Nassau to Long Island for the days you are flying. Alternatively, you can charter a flight from Fort Lauderdale direct to Long Island.
For access by water, there are 2 Marinas on Long Island, as well as well protected anchorages. Also for the adventurous, you can travel from Nassau to Long Island via Mailboat - check out the Fast Ferry to check on sailings, but usually the boat will leave the Potter's Cay dock in Nassau on Monday afternoon, and arrive at Long Island Simms dock on Tuesday morning, after a stop in Georgetown Exuma. This is also a great way to combine a visit to both Exuma and Long Island, and get an inexpensive trip over on the water!
At 60 miles long, and 1-4 miles wide, Long Island is one of the longest of the Bahamian Islands. A car is useful here, although taxi service is available.
Boat Rentals and fishing guides are available also to enhance your stay.
Long Island is a quiet place, no casinos, malls, or traffic! That is not to say it is a boring place. Nightlife can still be found at the various resorts, happy hours and festivals. You can find beaches where you can walk for miles without another person in sight. There are some wonderful restaurants, and also a very well stocked grocery store for stocking up for the week. There are many family owned 'burgers and beers' bars around, as well as a Conch Bar or 4. Both or which are a great place to meet locals. A variety of Bar/Grill locations offer a weekly Happy Hour, live Rake 'n' Scrape music, and sometimes movies as well.
